pursuing the opposite of dread
there are nonverbal cues everywhere, if we look hard enough
Recently I was interviewed for an extensive report on the idea of millennial dread and motherhood. We spoke about how motherhood is packaged to us, growing up in a multigenerational home versus living in a nuclear setting, who is screaming into the mic while the rest of us take care of our communities. There needs to be more deliberate inclusion of our voices sharing what community actually feels like.
As an elder millennial, or Xennial as I refer to myself, I don’t buy into the notion of 24/7 dread. We will never move forward with purpose as a society if we allow narratives steeped in cishet white capitalist ideology to attempt to imagine for all of us. Our liberation is found in our collective reimagining and dismantling of systems that never served us. I maintain that it is important to choose our words wisely and to identify who chooses the words for us.
